Directly receiving and decoding live weather imagery from NOAA and Meteor-M series satellites using custom RF hardware.
Tracking the Skies
Unlike standard weather apps, this project involves "listening" to satellites as they pass directly overhead. Using Orbitron, I track the real-time orbital mechanics of NOAA 15, 18, and 19 and the Russian Meteor-M1/M2 satellites.
Technical Workflow
Capturing high-resolution imagery from space requires precise timing and signal processing:
- Signal Acquisition: A custom-tuned V-Dipole antenna captures the 137MHz transmissions.
- Software Defined Radio: The raw radio waves are digitized and processed to account for Doppler shift.
- Decoding: Digital LRPT and Analog APT signals are converted into visible light and infrared maps of the Earth's surface.
